About Us
Slow Food Somerset is a
convivium of Slow Food International. “Convivium”
(plural Convivia) is a Latin word that means ‘a feast,
entertainment, a gathering’ in other words a social
group for local members of Slow Food.
The name “Slow Food” also
provides clues to what we are about. It is both a
contrast with fast food values and a reference to living
an unhurried life beginning at the table.
The activities of our
Convivium respect the heritage of the food and drink
within the county of Somerset. Whilst conviviality is
at the heart of everything we do, we do have some
serious aims, which principally are to:
-
Support producers of traditional regional foods and
drinks
-
Educate ourselves and others about food production
issues
-
Increase our knowledge and appreciation of “slow”
food and drinks
We do this through a
combination of educational and promotional initiatives
and events such as tastings, visits to producers and
food fairs, cookery courses, demonstrations, talks and
meals. Many of these events are open to non-members
although members benefit from a reduced price and
priority booking if places are limited.
